Lecture: Trust, Distrust and Internet Voting: Cases and Perspectives

Today, as a warm-up exercise and pre-event for the Final ECePS conference, long-term ECePS friend dr David Duenas Cid from Kozminski University, Warshaw (Poland) gave an inspiring talk about his research on trust in e-voting technology. As a scholar that was initially trained as a sociologist, David has developed a passion for trust in institutions, individuals and technologies, and in the past years he specialized and became an internationally recognized expert in the field of trust in voting technologies. He has been invited to conduct lectures and share his research findings in Australia, Austria, El Salvador, Georgia, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Spain … and Estonia.

In his lecture at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, David disentangled the notions of trust and distrust and presented and discussed findings from research conducted in Estonia. David used the Q-sort methodology to identify three different narratives on Internet voting: a habit trust narrative (summarized as the belief that practicing Internet voting in the past reinforces trust in the system now), an ecosystem trust narrative (summarized as the belief that since eID is used everywhere, Internet voting based on eID is trustworthy) and a political distrust narrative (summarized as specific politicians’ beliefs that Internet voting is flawed and therefore should not be trusted).

David’s enthusiasm and expertise sparked a lively discussion and may likely inspire members of the audience to pursue some of the avenues  for further research that emerged out of the discussion. Thank you very much for your wonderful contribution, David!
